Wednesday, Just Another

Washed my truck, did some yard work, did a podcast (#13, without the Colonel), cleaned some house, cooked some pork chops. I wasn’t really in the mood for going out, but it was Peter & James and Grenadine convinced me (didn’t take much really).

Ran into all kinds of people I hadn’t seen in a while: Kerry Whitehead, Stig Daniels + Cameraman Dave (?). Also those I had seen in a while but wasn’t expecting: Ramiro (his mother is improving (in the hospital)), Christy Kern, Pasadena Stevey (just back from recording in Austin), Mitch Pauls, and Dr. Trombone Bill. There were of course the regulars: Trey, Janet, Jack, & Nick.

I had forgotten that Governor’s Chair – James Noles (guitar and lead singer), Chuck Chavira (lead guitar and vocals), Charlie Earthman (bass guitar), and Joe Earthman (drums) – was playing last night. We caught a few songs there.

Some nice music from the Light Rock Light, and a bit of a late evening.

Smithville, Austin, and Dreams

gothic smithvilleSaturday I drove out to Smithville and had a fabulous time at Glover and Judy’s with fabulous weather and a nice evening swim in the lake. Drove into Austin and stayed at Mary Ellen’s.

Sunday was the Houston v Austin roller derby with lots more fun, convincing Bob Hewett and Bill Fergerson to come out, and hanging with the roller girls afterward (even though they lost to an amazing Hot Rod Honeys team) and actually meeting a few of them I hadn’t previously talked to.

The drive home was bathed in yellow wild flowers almost the whole way. When I get home I have two emails from different friends who had dreams about me:

Subject: Hello?

Are you OK? I dreamed you died last night, Continue reading

SXSW Images: Tricia w/ The Allen Oldies & Jim Bianco

Tricia ConductingJim Bianco, from Los Angeles, played Saturday morning at the Continental Club after the opening Allen Oldies Band, who cooked jalepeño pancakes. Tricia supported The Allen Oldies Band by being the guest chef. In her French Maid outfit, she cooked the pancakes, leaving Allen Hill to perform the Oldies.

Jim BiancoApparently, Jim Bianco, mistaking Tricia for her sister, Becky, who he apparently knows, walked past Tricia while she was cooking, and slapped her on the ass. And thus the introduction was made.

After that he had to invite her up to dance during one of his more burlesque numbers. He looks like he liked that decision. I liked his whole set, and think he would make ideal entertainment at the Big Top!

About the Allen Oldies, who packed the house at 10 am, Jim said, “Who would have thought that the toughest show of SXSW to follow would be at 11am?”

i’m blogging this

O’Reilly LogoI L.O.V.E. a good t-shirt.
And Jennifer was wearing one tonight.

“I’m blogging this” on the front.

It was geek-tastic.

As I was chatting with her, I had to glance to the back of her t-shirt. See if there was anything there. Indeed there was. www.oreilly.com My first thought was Blender Rebublican Extraordinaire found a cool shirt from Bill O’Reilly? He’s the anti-Elvis; he’s got no cool.

But, in my several years of non and under-employment, I forgot about the best manual publisher ever. O’Reilly. I love reading technical manuals more than any geek I know. And O’Reilly does ’em good.

Hmm, I think I’ll go curl up with a good perl or sendmail right now.

mundania

About 2 o’clock I stopped by Griff’s, already tented for the St. Patrick’s week. (Done Griff’s once on a St. Patties, don’t need to again.) On Saturday, they were having an Irish Stew cookoff. There were four team. Some friends of mine were first timers, so I stopped by to see how they were doing. Of course, one of the other teams had some people I know from about town – Catbirds regulars.

At 3pm was the 1st birthday for Haley Hamel, daugher of Todd and Kelly Hamel, my step-cousin. Todd lives in Oregon and was in town to have the party at his parent’s place – same house he had his 1st party. They invited everyone who was at his party. Some some people, Jerry Workman among them, I hadn’t seen in a while.

Dallied there with Todd and Kelley and his parents Carol and Lee for a while. Then headed to meet /Stig at the Big Top. Had a few beers with him and an interesting chat. Pete walked in, dudded up. Then there was a little Pete Gray show. Chatted with some first timers, they all loved the place. Ran into an old friend, Jim, who was the singer for Phyneas Guage. I haven’t seen him in years. I’m OK, You’re on Fire is still one of my favorite albums.

Also in the house, . And I met Jane Bond. Talked with her for a while. A very attractive, quirky, and affectionate girl. A guy from her band briefly played with Pete.
