A two player game, played on a 4×4 board with 16 pieces.
Rules Overview
The pieces each exhibit one binary aspect of four different traits.
• color (dark / light – or other varieties)
• height (short / tall)
• shape (round / square)
• solidity (hollow / solid)
The goal of the game is to place a piece and declare “Quarto!”, pointing out the line of four pieces on the board, just completed, that share one aspect of (at least) one trait.
If a player creates a quarto, but does not notice, and subsequently chooses a piece for their opponent to play. That opposing player can, at that moment before placing the piece, call “Quarto!” and win the game. If they play without noticing the missed call, that line of quarto can thereafter not win the game.
Turns alternate. Prior to each player’s turn, the opposing player chooses the piece that must be played.
