Whither Shiloh, Texas

Handbook of Texas OnlineSo, a few weeks ago, I was browsing the Handbook of Texas Online. It’s something I do. Browse resource materials. It’s similar to my love of the technical manual.

Anyway, as I was browsing The Handbook, I came across an interesting entry. Or more precisely, I came across sixteen identically titled entries. All for places named Shiloh, Texas.

Most Southerners think of The Battle of Shiloh, in Tennessee. Memorialized with a national park.

This, and many other towns came to the name from a common Bible reference, to a town that was known as a place of rest.

To find out whether later US towns were named for the battle field or the Biblical reference, you’d have to dig through some local history.

When I think of Shiloh, I think of the dive-bar just up the street from me at 13th & Studewood in the Heights. An,… interesting place,… to be diplomatic.

In The Handbook there are 16 places, all with references, that claim to have called themselves Shiloh, Texas at one time. I got an odd idea to try to visit all the places described in the entries.

So, tomorrow on my way to Austin, I will try to find the Shilohs in the following counties…

Burleson

Waller

Should be interesting.
I’ll need to get outta here reasonably early. I wanna be in Austin in time for a 4pm perfomance by Nellie McKay.

Fear and Loathing in Clear Lake

This one’s a doozie, don’t tread past the cut unless you’ve got some time to read.

Christmas night I went up to the Continental Club for the Handsomes show. It was crazy packed sold out, and understaffed. Luckily, they don’t have much material, so it was only about an hour of insane crush.

I was out till 2 a.m., had to work the next day. Slept till 8am, after hitting the snooze a few times. Stopped at the Fiesta for some lunch snacks, and the feed store for some dog food (empty bowl when I left the house).

Got in about 9:15 am. None of the doors were opened. Walked two blocks to Market Square, used the pay phone “local calls 50¢” to make a call to an 832 cell phone that was two blocks away, which is, of course, long distance, “4 minutes for a $1”. All I needed was 20 seconds.

Austin Weekend

I haven’t road tripped in a while, and haven’t made it to any UTexas games in Austin all year, so I finally decided late friday that I’d hit the road saturday morning to Austin. I haven’t been on the road on game day in a very long time (I usually go in friday night if not earlier). I haven’t seen all the oranged and longhorned cars in caravan from Houston to Austin in a while.

Stayed with Bob & Cristen, and went to their place in NW Austin about 1 pm. We soon left for the Tialgate – in a parking garage to fend off the weather. Unfortunately, a pinched nerve (sleeping wrong?) kept getting worse throughout the afternoon, so I spent the rest of the day is sharp pain. Though beer did a decent job of muscle relaxing.
