Songs About Travel

“Leaving on a jet plane.  Don’t know when I’ll be back again.”

“I took a trip on a Gimini space craft, and I thought about you.”

padresWell, I’m not leaving on a plane or a space craft, but instead on a rail-guided transportation vehicle. But I will be thinking about you.  My 31-day Amtrak adventure begins tonight.  Tomorrow I will receive a personal transport from Alpine to Marfa and this weekend will enjoy the Grand Opening of Padre’s Marfa.  Bringing frequent live music, into-the-evening dining, and a honky-tonk/dance hall to the Trans Pecos.  All in the body of a repurposed funeral home.

I was out there in September and the roof and the floor were both still works in progress. It’ll be nice to see.

Oh, and name the above artists.

Amtrak Booking

John D Was my roommate in Webster in the early 90s and the first resident of my house in the Houston Heights (I was living out of town when I bought it.)

He now resides in the San Francisco area and has tempted me with the Maker Faire to bypass Los Angeles.

I called up Amtrak to finalize the California part of my trip. Unfortunately the 5 minutes of connection time between the Sunset Limited and the Coast Starlight is not feasible. So without enough time to go south and visit another friend, I plan to make a day of it in central Los Angeles. Currently my plans include checking out Japan Town and perhaps a beer bar or two.

It ended up that all my previous bookings had been canceled because they were set to have the tickets picked up over a week ago. But it was no problem, they were all on file and have been rebooked.

I have also connected with Dmitri, a previous co-worker who is now at Google. He and I had a very intense software design relationship and it will be great to see him again. He’s gonna show me around the Google campus: should be fun.

Tentative Itinerary

If you haven’t noticed me mention it yet, I am planning a 31 day Amtrak trip from Houston, mostly to the west.  Two key points on the schedule are Padre’s Grand Opening over Memorial Weekend in Marfa, and Apple’s Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC) in San Francisco.

So, here’s the rough timeline.  Some of the pre-WWDC San Francisco and Reno parts aren’t exactly timed out yet.  I have purchased the 30-day pass, and booked most of the legs of the trip.

Houston: The train only comes through Houston three times a week, so I’m leaving Wednesday night; Continue reading

TravelPod

I’m currently planning a 31 day Amtrak trip to WWDC and back. In a circuitous fashion. I’m going to test out TravelPod.com when I take my trip. From the little work I’ve done with it so far, the only benefit it has over WordPress is its location awareness. It’s much harder to edit.

I’ll likely cross-post to both it and this location. But if you want to check it out, click the link above.

Got a Job: FlipSide5

I recently left my internal enterprise programming position at ambulance manufacturer Frazer, located in southwest Houston. I am now currently working with FlipSide5 on iPhone application development. Two of the main guys there are old NeXTstep programmers I worked with at FannieMae in the mid 90s and in a software development tools company, Inline Software, in the late 90s.

They are both based in Northern Virginia. I am, of course, in Houston. Though I will be traveling out there for a week to do some work and reconnect with Mike and Mike. I may be head-down in the code so much that I don’t get to revisit the city of Washington that I lived in for two years. But hopefully I get that chance soon.

And, in honor of a new job making crumbs, I give you They Might Be Giants:

BGG.Con

It’s been over a month since I went to BGG.Con – the BoardGameGeek.com‘s annual game-o-rama, and I need to get down in print the games I played, so here they go.

This year my procrastinating paid off. I ended up splitting a suite with four people, minimizing costs. I managed to never actually meet one of the roommates – the geeks don’t spend many waking moments not playing the games.

Unfortunately, there was no general wi-fi available, and no signal reachable from the main game room. Apparently there was a twitter contingency, but I was unreachable and unaware.

So, here a listing of all the games I played.

Yspahan.jpgYspahan – I have played this before, and own it. One of the many “Ys” named games from Ystari. It has an interesting dice mechanic. You are creating goods in a small town and trying to ship them out on the caravan.

Agricola.jpgAgricola – I finally got to play last years trendy game a little bit before the Con, but played it some more here. Certainly a good game with quite a bit of replay-ability. Nice interaction with other players in access to resources. Building your small farm-house, family, fields and livestock.

Desctruct3.jpgDestruct 3 – The open-area lobby always has many dexterity games set up. This one was new to us. You set up a tower, jenga-like. You roll a dice to choose one of three tools. You try to knock the tower over but not too far (off the board is minus points). This was a fun one, would be great fun for young boys.

Airships.jpgAirships – I met my current regular game group last year at this Con, and I’ve played this game several times with them. I ended up teaching this to several different people at the Con. It’s an easy to learn, and not too long game of building zeppelins.

Hamburgum.jpgHamburgum – My high school friend and college roommate Manuel came from SoCal for the Con. He was only there Thursday and Friday and was brain-fried; he was amazed I could handle two more days. He saw that I had played this game before and had me teach it. I like this game more each time I play – an interesting rondel mechanic and interconnections of actions that force you into a balanced game. And beer is one of the resources – how could that not be good? Continue reading
