VAST

VASTI wasn’t paying too much attention and then realized that VAST (site, wiki) was playing at the Continental Club last night only hours before it happened. I quite like the one album I have of this band – which is mostly a studio project – so I had to go to check them out.

I have only their first album from 1998, and would expect them to play a much larger place from the large sound on the recordings. There was definitely an odd crowd for the CC.

There were two opening bands, the stage was way overcrowded. I forget the first band’s name, it should have been the Toe Gazers. Uninteresting music executed barely competently. The second band was Po1nt (pronounced “point 1″) – they were a giant Seattle band. That is to say not metaphorical musical giants, but 6’3″ to 6’6” musicians. The singer was sometimes the screamer, the guitar player an aging shredder, and the bass player had an uber meatty sound but redeemed the vocals of the band with his backing vocals. You could hear the Seattle in their influences.

VAST was very good, Jon Crosby a bit moody, typical musician. Sometimes they played over a minor supporting track, but it was mostly guitar, guitar, bass with a violin joining them for a few. Their two-month, 50 date tour ends tomorrow in Austin.

Workin’ weekend

Friday night I babysat for nieces Avery and Madeleine, while my sister Monica and oldest niece Merritt were camping out with the Brownies.

Saturday I had lunch with my dad and everyone that splits season tickets for the Astros. I don’t split with them anymore, but Mary couldn’t make it, so I did her picking. I’m sure I’ll get some left-over tickets from Mary, Dad, or Raymond at some point. They usually end up with some they can’t use. I also got 4 free tickets to one of the exhibition games in early April.

Then I went to the office for several hours of work. There’s a bunch of case filings we’re trying to deal with. The reins of the Fen-Phen cases have been passed a few times, and some mishandling was aparent before.

partial lyrics of Sari, Nelly McKay
Well now I don’t mean to offend, much
Just comprehend
When you’re female and you’re fenced in and
Fen-phened to no end
And no zen guide to men will help you fend off the brethren
And then the pen appears
And better than the oxygen network
Or the sword or the spear or the fork
Or the bored pork-fed horde
It’s a mooring post
The whore you’ll miss the most when you’re away
When you’re in Snowshoe PA
Doin’ some play from Backstage
That deals with AIDS and race and gays and
Relationships and ballet
And then you’re like “hey yay what’d you say?
I can just sing my troubles away?”
But then you’re fucked
’cause you gotta make a buck
And the whole world sucks
And you’re like a lame duck
That’s lyin’ dyin’ tryin’ to sell out
But there’s no one buyin’ and there’s all this doubt
And you can preen and dream and scream and shout
But your life’s affliction is the fiction of Faust

…anyway, it was only a few hours, and mostly mindless (though not skill-less, some adeptness of searching for doctors on the internet speeds things considerably) so it went quickly.

I went out to see a bit of Moot & Wayne & Pete at the Continental club. And hung at the Big Top a bit. I leave a little early on Thursday, and miss Friday entirely, and there are stories all over the place. So, I heard some of those.

Now I’m up early on a Sunday morning to go assist some friends (and get a little ching) on a construction job. 3939 Westheimer. Gotta meet up at the shop (a.k.a the back of the Big Top) to get the tools for the day. Welder Dave, Leaning Jack, Bongo Jimmy, and me. Should be interesting.

SXSW Images: Tricia w/ The Allen Oldies & Jim Bianco

Tricia ConductingJim Bianco, from Los Angeles, played Saturday morning at the Continental Club after the opening Allen Oldies Band, who cooked jalepeño pancakes. Tricia supported The Allen Oldies Band by being the guest chef. In her French Maid outfit, she cooked the pancakes, leaving Allen Hill to perform the Oldies.

Jim BiancoApparently, Jim Bianco, mistaking Tricia for her sister, Becky, who he apparently knows, walked past Tricia while she was cooking, and slapped her on the ass. And thus the introduction was made.

After that he had to invite her up to dance during one of his more burlesque numbers. He looks like he liked that decision. I liked his whole set, and think he would make ideal entertainment at the Big Top!

About the Allen Oldies, who packed the house at 10 am, Jim said, “Who would have thought that the toughest show of SXSW to follow would be at 11am?”

SXSW pics

I have plenty (100) pics from SXSW, and you can look at them all. The pics on the main pages are thumbnails, and some of them point to the original (very large) pics. All of them aren’t there, yet. If there’s anything you want in full size, let me know, i’ll shuffle some.

Or, you can wait for me to post the various ones that I’ll comment on.
