Truckstop Honeymoon

Truckstop Honeymoon opened up for Split Lip Rayfield last night at the CC.  A two piece hillbilly bluegrass band.  Washtub bass, and banjo.  I enjoyed them thouroughly.  Katie was 8 months pregnant.

“THERE AIN’T NOTHING NICE ABOUT TRUCKSTOP HONEYMOON. THEY PLAY BANJOS AND WASH TUBS. THEY SING HELL-BENT SONGS ABOUT JESUS AND ADULTERY. THEY SING FROM THEIR STOMACHS.

Faron Young

My favorite 80’s song that Molly and the Ringwalds will never cover is Faron Young by Prefab Sprout, on their 1985 release Steve McQueen. That album was produced by Thomas Dolby, one of the best producers of the 80’s, IMHO. Apparently, SPIN magazine called the album one of the 30 best of all time.

When Love Breaks Down was a more popular song from the album, but the jangly Faron Young was always my favorite.

Antiques!
Every other sentiment’s an antique
As obsolete as warships in the baltic
I’m driving on a straight road it never alters

Tuesday night out

Last night I first went to Rodney Crowell’s CD release party at the Continental.  The Chronicle had a huge photo and front page story in the Houston section.  Likely over 200 people there.  Huge variety of fans.  Many hadn’t been to the CC before.  It was a great show.  This was the band’s first gig together, but it was tight.  Everyone enjoyed.

Then I made my way to Walter’s Ice House on Washington to see Tub Ring from Chicago.  I hung out most of Sunday with a few friends and the guitarist from this band.  Very nice guy.  Apparently Walter’s got a sound violation recently and the show almost didn’t go on.  There was a cop there when I showed up, but he wasn’t sure it was there that was the loudest (Mary Jane’s across the street sounded louder, and Silky’s was issuing noise as well.)  The Walters parking lot had more people in it than the inside because the band that was on was INSANELY loud.  There was absolutely no reason to be using half of the volume issuing from their stacks.

Tub Ring was definitely eclectic and punkish.  With one under-ager appearing to be Chris Farley trying to slam dance with himself.  The band was very animated including the keyboardist who both jumped on and slammed the keyboards against himself.  Entertaining, if poorly attended.

Lonestar @ Continental Club? No.

The Continental Club‘s been getting calls from people about Lonestar playing this sunday.  It humors me.   Digital City has it plastered as thier lead story (may come down soon, now that I’ve informed them of their error).

I assume the error happened because the website upcoming events said for sunday “Lone Star Juke Box” (Rick Heysquierdo’s radio show on KPFT) which got broken into two lines.  Digital City Dude read it wrong.  Didn’t check their schedule – County Fair, Eugene, OR.  Didn’t discriminate “Lone Star” v “Lonestar”.

Polyphonic Spree

I just saw the VW/ipod commerrcial with Polyphonic Spree (turn the music off on the main site, then try the polyphonic player).  Once again showing that VW Bug’s and Apple’s advertising are on the cutting edge.  They were one of the most amazing shows I saw at 2002 SXSW and had to see again this year.  By the end, you’re not sure if they are aping a cult or are trying to get you to join, but you don’t really care.  This 20-plus-piece band is one to see if you can get the chance!
They’ll be in NYC/Boston rsn, then europe for a bit, back in texas briefly in Sept (but not Houston), then sweeping about the usa.
