Fear and Loathing in Clear Lake

This one’s a doozie, don’t tread past the cut unless you’ve got some time to read.

Christmas night I went up to the Continental Club for the Handsomes show. It was crazy packed sold out, and understaffed. Luckily, they don’t have much material, so it was only about an hour of insane crush.

I was out till 2 a.m., had to work the next day. Slept till 8am, after hitting the snooze a few times. Stopped at the Fiesta for some lunch snacks, and the feed store for some dog food (empty bowl when I left the house).

Got in about 9:15 am. None of the doors were opened. Walked two blocks to Market Square, used the pay phone “local calls 50¢” to make a call to an 832 cell phone that was two blocks away, which is, of course, long distance, “4 minutes for a $1”. All I needed was 20 seconds.

A long day

Too much Jagermeister is bad for the body,… but I get ahead of myself.

I started early sunday at my sister’s opening presents with the nieces and my dad and step-mom and step-sis. Then the two older nieces, dad, and grand-dad went to the Texans game.

After a long saturday, I was more in the mood to hang out with my sister than to do legal work, so I hung out with her and watched the game on TV.

The Continental Club employee party was held starting in the evening in the new bar. Pete and Jack had been mopping and decorating for days, and it looked GREAT! It was so great to see people drinking at the bar and flowing through the space, even without the patio, which will be a great part of it. I can’t wait to get it open.

My Favorite thing about the party

My favorite thing about the party is all the various people who don’t know each other, meeting and having discussions.

99.9% of the people I know, and that others know and invite, are smart interesting (mostly beautiful – not talking about appearance) people. When they cross pollinate, meeting people they should have already known (and for the past few years – run into people they knew but haven’t seen in ages) it’s a wonderful thing.

Sherlock’s Pub (on W. Gray)

I hadn’t been in a while, not really liking the vibe last time I was there.

So, I went last night for Buddacrush, kindof a bluesrock with horns (sax/trombone). I’m not sure if it was the venue or the band, but I didn’t really like them. I was looking for something technical to knock them on, but it wasn’t really there. Initially, there were some high end painfulness in the vocals, but the sound guy fixed that.

When I got there (about 11pm), they were between sets. The interim music was blaring so loudly that I couldn’t hear myself think. And it was subpar crap they were playing too loud. The place was so 281 it was painful.

The Houston Press has a category for Category We Left Out. I think it should be Most Misplaced Bar. I used to think it was the Firehouse, which feels 281 at it’s 2 exits outside the loop address. But now I think Sherlock’s should take that honor.

On my way out, two guys entering: “…but it was an upper management decision…”, and a couple entering, he with his arm over her shoulder, but speaking in his cell phone on the other side of himself. Typifies the vibe of this bar.

Didn’t stay long enough to see the James/Reese Project.

Am I being an ITL snob? I don’t care.

Downtown

Saturday Evening, I was sitting in the skyview bar of the new Hilton Hotel in downtown Houston (24th floor) with Allen Hill. Just musing on the fact that My Sister and nieces were at the Nutcracker ballet earlier in the day. My mom was at a show at the Verison Theater, and I was attending the Bill White Reception in the 4th floor ballroom.

Downtown is once again a happening place.

I ended up at M bar later that night. Interesting for half an hour, but I was happy to leave.

Spent the whole morning and afternoon at the swap-n-bop at the Continental Club in nearby Midtown. Great weather outside (a bit cold, but nice and sunny). Got to show many people the new Charley’s Big Top Lounge. It was interesting to get different people’s reactions. All liked it, but what elements they noticed and commented on was interesting to hear.
