METRO

I’m taking METRO all week, not wanting to try to park downtown.

Last night, took the rail to the CC.
Got back downtown about 11:45.
It’s crazy down there already. Busy, crazy.

Not to mention the places that didn’t exist a week ago that are booming.

Also, they’ve got a pedestrian hip-rail up next to the light rail.
I asked, and it’s temporary, to be placed for events and pulled when there’s road traffic. Very good idea.

As for the yet-another-illegal-left accident yesterday: trains 11, idiots 0.

Charley’s Big Top Lounge: day 5

Most recent edition: the outside elephant, the elephant handle.

So, I’ve been hanging out at the big top the last two nights. Way too much. I’m sure I’ll be there again tonight, but not too long. There’s still a million little things to do there (and a couple of not so little things).

Last night the Light Rock Express played there. It was good, people enjoyed. I think it was a hair too loud, and I know they were trying to manage that. Time will tell if it works.

More of the crowd last night were people I don’t know – that’s a good sign.

Also, i get a lot of opinion from a lot of people about little things. I’d say about a third of them are contradictory. Oh, well. Can’t please all the people, all the time.

The biggest need right now: more chairs, more tables.

Old School Houston

For those young un’s out there who weren’t out seeing live music in Houston in 1991 (When the likes of Banana Blender Surprise could be seen at Pig Live), there was a local band called The Missiles. They were best known for a song called Can’t get no respect from the Public News. Charlie, the singer/bassist was having a public war with the now defunct but once dominant entertainment weekly. (Charlie is now playing bass for Jesse Dayton)

But I recalled another song on their Atomic Fireball CD which, while written a while ago, is actually Sam‘s theme some. I Wanna be a Sex God.[mp3] Because that’s what being a Rock God is really all about. And it’s nice and guitar heavy, so I know he and Dekan will like it.

As a side note, Bob Hewett, John DeVenezia and I were at the CD release for this at Fitzgerald’s. We were thrashing about the floor, as we were want to do at the time. They had extra tables set a bit close to the stage. One woman was annoyed, I guess at the fact that we were enjoying the music in a way she wasn’t. John accidentally or deliberately, who’s to say, bumped her table. In two seconds she upended her bottle and was yelling at John. The bouncer came over from the top of the stairs in no time flat, and I’m thinking “great, we’re gonna get booted out of here for pissing off some friend/family of the band”. The bouncer grabbed her by the arm and said “let’s go lady”.

After the show he commented to us, “that woman handled that bottle like she was raised at Gilley’s.” Ahh, good times.

NYE FYI

I know you know about the NYE, Continental Club style – no cover, champagne, The El Orbits, the Allen Oldies Band…

And you know you gotta get there early because a line forms on that night.

An now you know that the overflow will be tailing into the Big Top. That’s right. 99% certain that it will be open, yet it’s front wall will still be unrazed. But, it will be open for business and fabulous hanging out overflow drinking.

Be there, or lose your roundness.
