Tuesday night out

Last night I first went to Rodney Crowell’s CD release party at the Continental.  The Chronicle had a huge photo and front page story in the Houston section.  Likely over 200 people there.  Huge variety of fans.  Many hadn’t been to the CC before.  It was a great show.  This was the band’s first gig together, but it was tight.  Everyone enjoyed.

Then I made my way to Walter’s Ice House on Washington to see Tub Ring from Chicago.  I hung out most of Sunday with a few friends and the guitarist from this band.  Very nice guy.  Apparently Walter’s got a sound violation recently and the show almost didn’t go on.  There was a cop there when I showed up, but he wasn’t sure it was there that was the loudest (Mary Jane’s across the street sounded louder, and Silky’s was issuing noise as well.)  The Walters parking lot had more people in it than the inside because the band that was on was INSANELY loud.  There was absolutely no reason to be using half of the volume issuing from their stacks.

Tub Ring was definitely eclectic and punkish.  With one under-ager appearing to be Chris Farley trying to slam dance with himself.  The band was very animated including the keyboardist who both jumped on and slammed the keyboards against himself.  Entertaining, if poorly attended.

Frenetic Day

Hmm,

So, thursday night, I was up till midnight or so,
then a bit before 5 a.m. it became apparent i wasn’t going to be sleeping,
so i got up,
got the paper,
needed Dr Pepper,
walked (one block) to the Save Store
(for the first time in my eight year residence, i found out they’re not open at 5 a.m.)
walked the other direction to the Diamond Shamrock,
got 2 liters Dr Pepper,
morning is good,

about 7 a.m. laid down in bed listening to NPR,
stared at my eyelids till 8 a.m.

bad mojo, good mojo

OK, so it’s been a weird mojo day.
I officially got into the ACP for HISD, but the day before…

My roommate’s (Conn’s) car was totalled, while parked outside his place of work (Catbirds) and two others were damaged.  But the hit and runner had no luck, because someone had just had a 2×4 tossed through their window around the corner, so the HPD went and soon got the guy, who’s 30th birthday it was (and whose friend obviously suck for getting him drunk and not driving him home).  Previously that day (around noon), at the construction site across the street, the crane dropped a load, killing one (near bottom) and seriously injuring another.

Shirl’s Weekend Preview

What are you doing this weekend?

Get out of the house!

Here’s some stuff going on in Houston…

International Festival is downtown on saturday and sunday which means many stages of music and lots of food and other things to entertain. I have found their website lacking, in particular a nice grid breakdown of the music by stage & time. But you’ll likely get one at the door (for your $10, $8 from HEB), and bopping between stages is the point, not overly preplanned listening.

Friday night at the Continental Club is Sugarman 3. If you want to see some NYC Soul/Funk, this is the show. $10

Also Friday night at Last Concert Cafe there is a great Austin band, Grupo Fantasma. I saw their multi-horn array at SXSW and it was a packed, high-energy show that everyone enjoyed. $6 (?)

Music on the bands’ sites if you want to prejudge whether you’ll like it.

(I’ll be at Grupo, Int Fest (Sun, maybe Sat), and the Astros on Sat)

SXSW Thu Night

SXSW day 2.

4p

We missed a band last night called Dressy Bessy, they seemed good, so we went to check them out at Waterloo Records in-store. It was decent, but something missing. Very cute red-haired chick singer, gigantic guitar player. Perhaps because they didn’t have much room in the record store, but they didn’t seem to have much excitement.

Michelle and I stepped next door for some lunch. I had the chicken fried stake, and I have to say it was the worst chicken friend steak i’ve had in i-can’t-remember-how-long. There’s musicians coming from all over the world to the music store, I sure hope they’re not eating there and judging it.
