Houston Roller Derby Starts This Weekend

The Houston Roller Derby is starting up their 2009 season this weekend at Kicks Indoor.  The doors will open at 6pm, the bout will start at 7pm this Saturday, and the after party will be at the new venue (we have to break it in right).

Here’s a note from Scarlet O’Hurtya (twitter):

I hope everyone is as excited as all the skaters are! Our season officially kicks off in 4 DAYS!

ScarletOHurtyaDo you have your tickets? Have you invited all of your friends, coworkers, and random people you may run in to? We sure hope so!

$12 Tickets will only be available until this Friday- after that, you’ll have to hope space is left and buy them at the door for $15. Save yourself the $3 and the anxiety by purchasing your tickets in advance and use the leftover cash to buy something at the game (merch, beverage of choice, etc.)…

Oh, and FYI, in addition to music from Beryl Grady, halftime will also feature a corndog eating contest presented by Miramax in promotion of their upcoming release, “Adventureland”.

5 lucky contestants (ideally 1 fan representing each team, 1 Machete Bettie Rec League representative and a 1st time derby attendee) will have 2 minutes to devour as many corndogs as possible. The winner will receive some cool stuff from Miramax and of course the admiration of rollergirls and fellow crowd members alike. I know you’re getting hungry just reading this…

We look forward to seeing everyone at the game! Come early! Bring friends! Bring family! Bring your coworkers! Bring anyone in favor of having a fun time!

Remember, the afterparty will be held at our venue, Kicks indoor (they have a full bar).

Saturday Saturday Saturday!!

Much Love,

In the Hood

I was out for a bicycle ride in the neighborhood on Saturday. Actually, I was running up to the Credit Union on 19th. It’s always nice to check out what’s going on in the neighborhood.

I went close to Evan and Emily’s place. Just got their birth announcement in the mail, but I decided to not stop by lest they be trying to get some needed sleep.

I rode along some of the under-costruction rail-to-trails bike path along Nicholson. It’s mostly paved from 7th to 19th, the last few blocks haven’t been started. There’s some paint that looks like they may be doing some utility work first. Much of it has been sodded, and there were palettes of more sod along the path.

There was one yard worker parked in the mud that hadn’t been sodded. Big truck, bug trailer. And when I came back, he had left giant ruts in the mud. Moron. I almost said something to him on my way past; I should have.

The cute cottage on 9th and Beverly, that was crushed by a tree during Ike (likely because the McMansion next to it compromised the root structure of the large tree) was demolished and carted off. Likely new construction to begin soon. Expect gaudy.

Day 11 – No Power

Hasn’t been too hot to effect sleeping.

Not having electricity means waking up whenever, but that’s life.

CenterPoint has the 77007 zip code estimated as 21% outage still.  They had previously estimated that we would be below 20% outtage by Thursday.  Yes, restoration has visibly slowed.

Monday on the Roads

It’s 10 days after Ike slammed us. Driving about town is still a hassle. It took over an hour for me to get home. It’s usually a 30-40 minute commute in the evening.

Today was the first day I’ve seen police directing traffic at the intersections. They were in dire need of doing that for days. It’s been obvious that the return of electrical service has felt painfully slow for many (about 50% of the area has been restored after 10 days).

However, power to the street signals has come faster than the city can get to them to fix them or even reset the cycles. So, they’ve finally realized they need to be directing traffic about town.

Saturday

No electricity at the Continental Club, so I had a low key evening at Virginia’s watching The Empire Strikes Back. Headed home about 10:30.

It’s definitely getting warmer and more humid, but I got to sleep (listening to the collapse of the underregulated US banking system this week) and didn’t get out of bed until after 9.

The phone guy is here this morning. On the pole (which is broken at the top) testing the lines. Someone’s cutting some small brush from the house catty-corner.

This is the first time I’ve had all week to do any work during daylight, so that’s what I’ll be doing.

The Woods Food Store (previously Saver) is open without power … finally. The cashier said “it’s just weather” on Friday before the storm, and it took him over a week to reopen and no ice or generator. Welcome to the Gulf Coast sir.

Wednesday

Came home from work to find neighbor Kathy and some friends finalizing the clearing of her debris. After chainsawing my Red Bud, they forced me to head out to The Tavern on Gray. It’s been open for days and tonight is Steak Night. We ate, and it was very good!

The place was packed, a duo of acoustic guitar gave the 281/Bourbon Street feel to the evening.

Nicole at work was right when she said this whole week is like Saturday night because no one is working.

…, Cher, Johnny Cash, ZZTop, accoustica, Eric Clapton, (break) … Van Morrison

It was very Dive Bar New Orleans.
