So, I still don’t have a teaching job. I went to the “gosh it’s late and we need to fill our positions” HISD Job Fair yesterday. On the good side, there weren’t nearly as many people as at the last one (they all got jobs), and there were several schools looking for math. On the down side, the Tech Market collapse seems to have created a glut of “What do I do now?” math teacher applicants. There were at least 15 people there and only a few high schools with openings. They were all lining up for the middle schools as well (I passed on the middle schools).

TExES
You have to take (and pass) two tests (along with a lot of other observational paperwork) to get certified to teach in Texas. To probationally teach (without certification, for a year) you must pass the subject matter exam.
It is the TExES (Texas Examinations of Educator Standards), and I took the Math 8-12 on Sat Jun 28. Just got the results back. You need a 240 out of 300 to “pass”. Drum roll, please… Continue reading
No Job for Bill,… yet
So, last Sunday I returned home to have a message on my machine that Reagan High School was interviewing for a Math teacher. I went to bed, got up, showered, gave them a call, they asked if I could come in in 45 minutes. I did. The interview went ok, but not great.
Reagan is less than a mile from my house and would be great because of that. Carlos Hernandez, who I interviewed with (with Bill ? and Julie ?) I liked. But when I met the principal some time ago I got some weird vibes. Though I would have loved to work that close, I was somewhat apathetic as to the outcome – several weeks ago I interviewed with Furr and the principal loved me and I liked her, but she didn’t have any jobs. Reagan called back on saturday to let me know they offered the job to another candidate.
So, now there’s a job fair in a few weeks, I guess I’ll go there for the last minute hiring blitz – I hope it’s not as much of a crazy scene as it was last time.

HISD Job Fair
Last friday I went to the HISD Job fair. It was a mad house. If you want confirmation that the economy sucks, showing up there would provide you with it. First, the room was too small and the tables too close.
There are 5 schools with 9 HS math positions open. I know there to be 10-20 people looking to fill those. Reagan, which I wanted, does not have one open. The most interesting that do are Milby and Wheatley. There is one school with 5 openings (which makes one wonder). It is, of course, the one which would be the worst commute for me. Westside directly out the I-10 freeway from me. It is a relatively new school, but the commute would be daunting.
There should be callbacks this week from Milby and/or Wheatly, if they’re interested.

ACP IFE 123
So ACP is going along. I went to Reagan HS to check into a job and talked to one of the assistant principals. He’s not sure of next year because the school is getting smaller (and loosing some teachers). 45 days before the new school year the teachers have to confirm to him they will be back. From the unstated, I assume they have not already done so. So around July 4 is when that should happen.
I’m Math 8-12, so I can teach Junior High level, but only 8th grade.
bad mojo, good mojo
OK, so it’s been a weird mojo day.
I officially got into the ACP for HISD, but the day before…
My roommate’s (Conn’s) car was totalled, while parked outside his place of work (Catbirds) and two others were damaged. But the hit and runner had no luck, because someone had just had a 2×4 tossed through their window around the corner, so the HPD went and soon got the guy, who’s 30th birthday it was (and whose friend obviously suck for getting him drunk and not driving him home). Previously that day (around noon), at the construction site across the street, the crane dropped a load, killing one (near bottom) and seriously injuring another.
So,… Continue reading
