New Stove and More

Recently, my friend Virginia O informed me that her sister Elizabeth was demolishing her house and had some last items for sale. Well, this sounded like a good opportunity, and I had some time, so I checked it out.

Particularly Virginia had mentioned a stove/oven. I have been needing a new one for a long time. I had wanted a gas stove, but the current connection was for an electric, and that seemed to be the easiest road to take.

stoveSo, I took the stove , it fit in the back of my Subaru no problem. When I got home, moved the old beast onto the back porch, did a 10-year cleaning of the area, and pushed the new oven into place, I found out that 220 volt plugs have changed in the last (insert correct number) decades.

I had to return to the house to pick up an entertainment center, so when I returned, I extricated the plug that was previously in use for the stove, and later installed it at my house.

It works great, and I first tested it out baking a store pizza on my long-unused pizza stone. Trés magnifique!

As mentioned, I also picked up an entertainment center. Mine works fine, but I’ve been using it for eight or so years, and it leads a bit to visual clutter, and also allowed a full cover of dust because of its openness.

wardrobeThe new entertainment center is actually a wardrobe from Mexico. Given that I live in an old house with a limited amount of closet space, it could actually be put to that use, if I wanted to. But, It works well as an entertainment center.

If my television was an inch less deep it would be perfect; as it is, it touches the TV when closed and doesn’t close perfectly.

I didn’t appreciate the full heft of the piece until I got Kevin and Conn over to the house to pick it up. It’s an extremely solid piece. We ran it into several things, with only colored markings to indicate what they might have been. The marks only add to its rustic charm.

Apparently the piece was hauled back from Mexico on the top of an Isuzu with great drama. I’m glad it made it and happy to have the piece now.

Heavy Trash – I’ll Be Here All Week

I made a point to drag all my heavy trash out to the curb on Sunday so that I would not have to keep it for another month. I also cut down some limbs with my new tree pruner, but not as many as were on the list.

The trashed stove/oven/microwave, the fallen ancient television antenna, and the water heater with a giant rusted hole in the bottom all disappeared from the front curb in about an hour.

The limbs on the other hand are still there this evening.

A little sleuthing leads me find out that they’ve changed the heavy trash days in my neighborhood.

Looks like I’ll have a pile of limbs for another week. Perhaps I’ll cut them up a bit; perhaps I’ll add to it.

DVD-rama

I used to use peerflix.com to get DVDs, but I got busy at one point, and didn’t have time to watch the movies I was receiving. So, I let the account go stagnant. They threatened to remove my account for inactivity, and though I can still login, the account page is all wonky.

When I emptied out my 300 carousel DVD player after it broke, I re-discovered all the forgotten movies. The trick is none of them have containers for me to put them in (unlike the CDs which I had in four 100 CD albums).

Watched – If you want to borrow, let me know.

  • The Girl in Lovers Lane – 1959, black and white, almost watchable
  • The Manchurian Candidate – wide screen and “standard” – 1962, Frank Sinatra, Janet Leigh, classic
  • Paycheck – Ben Afflec, Uma Thurman
  • Die Another Day – Pierce Brosnan Bond, 2 discs
  • Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle – excellent, I really need to see the second one
  • Anchorman
  • Free Enterprise – an indie geek romantic comedy about two trekkies who meet a messed up William Shatner, funny, with an insane number of sci-fi, comic book, and movie culture references

Unwatched – When will I find the time? Tell me which ones to watch first.

  • Y Tu Mamá También
  • Everything is Illumated
  • Se7en – 2 discs
  • Kiss Kiss Bang Bang
  • A History of Violence
  • Spanglish
  • Yes
  • Syriana
  • Paradise Now
  • Nine Lives
  • True Romance – unrated directors cut, 2 discs, started to watch and didn’t like
  • Capote

I had also received a copy of Lord of the Rings: Return of the King via swaptree.com but it didn’t play on my old DVD player, it’s quite scratched up. When I was re-boxing all of the other DVDs, I put it in the new player on a whim figuring it might have better oversampling/correction. Indeed, the $50 player had no problem at all with the disc!

Unfortunately, I put this classically epic movie in after 10 pm on a week night and at 1 am had to turn it off with over an hour left.

More Falling Apart: DVD

I have an over-large expensive 301 disc DVD/CD player. But it’s fairly old (no HDMI output). The Pioneer DV-F727 got slightly flaky before it stopped working all together.

Some investigation showed that the mechanism to spin the disc is what failed. With all the other moving parts I thought it would have been something else.

Of course, I have the 3rd season of Battlestar Gallactica borrowed and was in no state to be DVD-less (sure, no hot water still, but I can manage). I went to the Target, they didn’t have the one on the shelf I wanted (for $80), so I got the $50 RCA DRC277. It’s tiny. And it upscales for HDMI output, not that I’ll need it anytime soon – my receiver doesn’t manage that format, either.

After some cabling troubleshooting, I finished off the 3rd season. Now I have to wait till the current season is over and for sale.

Also, Pioneer wins over RCA for website customer support!

Continual Compressor/Condensor Running

The Compressor/Condensor for my air conditioner has been running for over 36 hours straight. I haven’t been able to determine what the cause might be. When I turn the A/C off, or run only the fan, the compressor still runs (and cools with the fan).

I cut the power to the compressor for a while, and then back on. It still runs continually. Annoying.

The tree guy finally came and righted my rose bush on Sunday. Four guys couldn’t get it up. They had to tie a rope to it, run it over the house and to the street. Pulling it with their pick-up truck. Then it took over and hour to attach it.

SXSW Day 3 + 4

fallen roseMy Friday and Saturday were true to form of many past years, centering on South Congress and socialization more than music. Though there were some notable music acts, still. I’ll try to transcribe my notes soon.

I’m back in Houston, back to work, dealing with some wind damage, (cancelled plans for tonight), doing laundry, and tomorrow a Gogol Bordello show, not to mention three podcasts in the can that I need to edit.

So, following busy with busy.
