Bootstraps

DrMartenBoot.jpgA few months ago I received two pairs of boots from someone on Heights Montrose Freecycle. One pair I wear quite often, Dr Marten 10-eyelet boots. The classic black original. Can’t beat it for free.

Also a few months ago, between being offered my new job and starting it, I was at a store with TG looking for good work shoes for her, and they were having a discontinuation clearance on several shoes. One was a Vasque Breeze XCR Hiking Boot, and it was less than $70.

VasqueBoot.jpgEvery good computer programmer needs a pair of hiking boots. My last pair was purchased just after my last software job melted back into the job pool and I took some time off. I went to Puerto Rico and hiked about in El Yunque rain forest.

Those boots have seen many a pavement pounding day beneath them, including a trip to Belgium, Amsterdam, and France, and need to be retired. So, the new boots it is.

What I really like about both pairs of boots is the bootstraps. More shoes should have bootstraps! Helping you to pull on those snug-fitting comfortable and useful shoes.

Hooray Bootstraps!

Benjamin Franklin on Houston

During my morning benefactorial reading of Benjamin Franklin Wit and Wisdom, I came across the following passage.

After three days men grow weary of a wench, a guest, and weather rainy.

As is typical, yesterday was nice and clear blue skies after one day of gray and one day of rain. The gray is back again today, but i’d wager not for long.

Like the weather, guests in Houston don’t typically stay for longer than three days (a friend will be here for three in January).

Avant Garden

I went to a happy hour on Tuesday at Avant Garden.  It’s the old Helios at 411 Westheimer.  It’s had quite a bit of going over and is somewhat of a snazzy place.  If you’re looking for a place to have a drink with a friend, I highly suggest it.

Upstairs, outside on the patio, or in the entry room.  All nicely casual, and loungy.

Mrs. Beinhorn

The kids have all come for their candy. Most get driven to the neighborhood and dropped off while their parents tail them in the car. Others aren’t big enough to walk (or eat candy) and their mothers carry them to the door. Many don’t as much as mumble at the door.

I did hear so scary sounds emanating from down the street. Didn’t investigate.

My most memorable Halloween memory from my youth was walking about with only one neighbor and he insisted we go up to Old Lady Beinhorn’s door. Her small cottage was on the very back of her lot and it was a good 200 feet up the driveway. I’d never actually seen or met her, and I was scared.

I don’t know why I was scared, but the kid I was with convinced me. We got there and knocked. The door creeked open and the light issued out.

She was so happy some kids had shown up, she invited us inside, and dumped the humongo sized Hershes bars in out bags, several of them. Then some sugary sweets to boot. I got more there than the rest of the block.

I’m sure Mrs. Beinhorn, the widow of the Patriarch of our neighborhood (Beinhorn Terrace Estates), is long gone from this world, but I still remember her.

SEXTILIS • I • MCMLXVII

“Whereas the Emperor Augustus Caesar, in the month of Sextilis, was first admitted to the consulate, and thrice entered the city in triumph, and in the same month the legions, from the Janiculum, placed themselves under his auspices, and in the same month Egypt was brought under the authority of the Roman people, and in the same month an end was put to the civil wars; and whereas for these reasons the said month is, and has been, most fortunate to this empire, it is hereby decreed by the senate that the said month shall be called Augustus.”

Log Entry - Day 14,609

Traveler’s Log, Day 14,609,

The Humans still don’t suspect I am not one of them. The huge range of activities they engage in is ever entertaining. Some of them eat pureed beans. Some of them skate in circles and hit each other. Some of them amass great skill fermenting grains. Some of them imbibe these elixirs with nary a thought. Some of them die their fur. Some of them shave their fur. . . in increasingly odd areas. They beam things about in the ultraviolet spectrum to see the rain, to transmit picture and sound, and to cook rolled food called a burrito. The contort their bodies in weird ways: kissing their feet for exercise, bending their thumbs to commute via teletype, and ratcheting their spines for relief from something (I haven’t determined what). They combust large amounts of large hydrocarbons to propel large objects, and do it with hydrocarbons from increasingly odd sources. They think the amount of time they spend under running water keeps them from stinking. They have an enormous number of pastimes that include spherical objects. Their behavior is always intriguing.

I am luring a number of them to a less densely populated are in a few days time to better study them. It should be fun.
