MOB Offends Okies

Rice LogoThe chron reports (if you want to call it that) that the MOB is apologizing again. This time for calling an ex-coach a douche bag and intimating that Tulsa is in hell.

Boo hoo. I guess Tulsa alumni are the last little piggie.

Tuesday at Gingerman

A few months back I was installing an application on my computer, and I checked the “about” box as I usually do, and there was Andrew Loewenstern’s name. I worked with him at the WilTel Advanced Technology Group back in 1994. I put his email address in my address book and forgot about it.

St Arnold ChristmasLast night I sent out a mass mail about the party.shirl.com and got a surprised response from him. Though he’s living in San Francisco now, and we haven’t seen each other in more than 13 years, he was in town for Thanksgiving and is leaving tomorrow.

So, we had some beer at the Gingerman. I forgot I’d tough him how to brew. He’s now appreciating the wine out in CA, working for BitTorrent. But it was nice to catch up with him and a nice St. Arnold Christmas and a Sierra Nevada Celebration were tasty and geographically appropriate.

twitter logoDoes anyone out there twitter?  Do you know anyone who does?  I guess since I’m cell phone-less that it’s of limited use for me.  (Though if I had an iPod Touch I could use that, perhaps.)

BGG.Con 2007

I spent four days in Irving, Texas playing board games with people from all over the place. It was a fabulous good time. With a game library of over 1000 games, not including those brought by the attendees, there were orders of magnitude more options than time allowed.

My photos are on flickr, and are mostly of games.

My only regret is not playing a game of Dune, and out of print game. They had an unpunched version of it in the library. A $100-$200 value in the current market. The game is going to be re-released in a year or two but without the Dune theme.

The hottest game of the convention was Agricola, which isn’t even available yet. There was one English copy and a few German ones with the cards in sleeves and printed translations accompanying them.

There were raffle drawing giveaway items each day with fabulous lists of prizes. And every attendee received a free game of our choice (in the pile) in addition to the two small games in the swag bag. BGG.Con 2007 – continue reading …

In Defense of Patriotism

There was a brilliant essay by Ron Rosenbaum in Monday’s Slate.com that I didn’t hear until today on Slate’s daily podcast. It’s titled In Defense of Obama’s Patriotism: a dissent on the pledge.

You should read the whole thing, but here’s a snip:

I certainly feel allegiance, though less to the inanimate flag than to “the republic for which it stands,” but, paradoxically, the moment when I feel most rebellious about that allegiance is when I’m being forced by state or social coercion to pledge allegiance. The America I feel allegiance to isn’t the America that requires compulsory displays of loyalty.

All in an atmosphere of Barack Obama being chastised for his purportedly less-than-patriotic behavior, this short piece gives a few lessons on Minnersville School District v. Gobitis, et al. that most Americans could do to relearn.
