Music and Derby

Saturday afternoon - a nail-biter with UT barely taking home the win from Central Florida.

Went to the Astro Arena for a concert Friday night. Free tickets + $10 to park. The Killers were the main act. They added a super sucky opening opening band. Louis IV played second.

Louis IV was good, but like the entire night, the balance was super crappy. I think it’s indigenous to all large venues - pumping too much bass and sub-bass to inappropriate music, and leaving the vocals inaudible.

We left soon after the Killers started. I continue to be underwhelmed by them. They are now enhancing their tepidness with gaudy stage theatrics (which were at least a little cool).

I ran into Richard Naudin, Law, and Wiley at various times. Law: “The Killers? Really?” Me: “free tickets”.

Then I tried to get as much sleep as possible, then spent 11+ hours at Verison Wireless for The Governor’s Cup of Roller Derby - 4 bouts. Then several more hours at the after party. I slept hard after that.

Apparently  while I was doing derby, the Texans won their game to be 2-0 for 2007.  The 8-8 season may be within their grasp.

Concert Meme

Having seen Lisa Novak and Felipe Galvan y Sus Carnales last weekend and seeing Louis XIV and The Killers this coming Saturday, and in lieu of actual content, I give you the concert meme (ganked from Big Al):

Copy this list. Leave in the bands you’ve seen perform live. Delete the ones you haven’t and add new ones that you have seen until you reach 25. An asterisk means the previous person had it on their list. Two asterisks means the last two people who did this before you had that band on their list.

iPod idea

iPod touchAs soon as the iPod was out, some users whined about wanting a radio tuner embedded, and eventually they got an external one. Personally, I almost never would want it. That’s the point of the iPod - the radio these days sucks.

Now that the new iPod touch is out, and is quite nice for video, I’m thinking it would be cool to have an HD tuner attached to it. Of course, watching college football made me think of it – that would be the ideal use.

How small can a tuner be made? How much power does it consume? Will Apple let companies start officially adding applications (it seems so from the half vacant home screen)?

I heard a business pundit on NPR the day before the announcement - “what’s left to do with iPods? they’re already played out. who could want more that 80GB?” That person looks like an idiot today. These will be the holiday fodder once again.

But how long will it take before we have an HDTV tuner on these puppies? I’d be surprised if it’s not before Xmas 2008.

Note to me: all Houston library branches have free Wi-Fi (and so does HCC).  Oh,… and get the iPhone without the phone: iPod touch. Then I can continue to stay cell phone free.

Game weekend

KeythedralSaturday: Stayed home and worked around the house.

Sunday: 3-man after the pool party, with mostly young-un stangers.  It was fun.

Monday: James, TG, and Romy over to play Indonesia and then a 2-man game of  Twilight Imperium 2.  Both long, both fun.  Even if I came in last in both - still working on those strategies.

Tuesday: Went to Woody & Rebecca’s with TG and played Keythedral (which I got for my birthday).  I finally won a game.  It was close and everyone enjoyed.   First time to play it with 4 - much more complex dynamic.
