The print article in the star section is considerably longer than the online version. KLOL died a few years ago, KIOL tried to resurrect it and failed (20th of 37 stations), so now they’re going with the “fresh new thing”. I’m sure it will spike up for it’s newness, but will again grow stale and old. Instead of updating their play list with time, they’ll rebrand it again.
Jack FM to make Houston debut

The eclectic, iPod shuffle-like music format known as Jack FM makes its Houston debut at 10:37 a.m. Friday at 103.7 FM.
The Cumulus Media station, now known as KIOL or Rock 103.7 FM, will be reformatted as KHJK, said Pat Fant, Cumulus’ Houston market manager.
Houston will be the seventh market in Texas and the fifth top 10 market in the country to add Jack FM, which formats about a thousand songs by 500 artists in 18 genres of music dating from the late 1960s through today.
Jack FM operates without live DJs, so Cumulus will attempt to find positions elsewhere in the company for Rock 103.7’s current on-air personalities.

I love that the impending axe will fall in less then three hours and the website says “This Labor Day Weekend Rock 103.7 is counting down the Top 500 Rock Songs of All Time, and you get to pick the songs…”
And their Babe-of-the-Day gives you super-hyphenated information on who their target audience was. Radio station or soft-core porn portal?
And, according to the FCC, the KHJK call sign was registered ten days ago to 99.1 in Sioux Falls.

Last Friday, Tricia (aka Ruth Ann) and I had a one-day road trip to see James McMurtry at Gruene Hall. We first went to my dad’s place on Canyon Lake. Hung out and chatted. The water is very high and the gates are wide open, so we went down the 306 side of the river.
We met up with Faithe, who recently moved to San Antonio, at the Grist Mill and had a nice meal. We noticed that James was eating a few tables away. Tricia had a chat with him for a while, and we all said hi before we left. He mentioned we should go down to the river to check it out.
The Guadalupe was flowing over the bridge just down the street, and quite a torrent it was. We headed back and caught the Ded Ringers. We both quite like this young band from Austin. Good songwriters for being so young.
Most of the perimeter and picnic table seating was taken when we went in, so we stood back from the stage near the sound board. Becky (aka Lynn) and several other friends (including James’ girlfriend) showed up during the opening band. Between sets a very tall boot wearer asked us if there was “any reason we were standing here?” It being the implication that we were blocking he and his wife’s lazy asses view in the back of the room.

I was a bit surprised when I read in this morning’s paper that “the bikeway plans [through the Heights] … could begin and be completed in 2008″. Could being the operative word. Next year is what they’ve said every year since 2000 or so.
This bike trail rail line was cleared a decade ago and has been owned by TxDOT since then. The City’s been talking big about it being a bike trail that entire time. Now METRO is interested in the right-of-way. Was anyone really surprised that they weren’t aware of the City’s purported plans?
If the City had built out this route “next year” one of the previous times, perhaps METRO wouldn’t have been so out of the loop.

Saturday,… Saturday?! If you wanted me to read something, why did you print it on Saturday, Chronicle? Make Saturday happen during the week and maybe I’ll read it. But,…
…oh, is this thing on?
Ahem. So, as I am enjoying my Slothness and not chasing some job possibilities because I have one waiting to start. Earthlink is being all jittery like a first date. They won’t sign the papers with CenterPoint, because their requirements clock doesn’t start until they sign.
I thought they made a bad business decision when they got into this, but that’s their problem. (This technology is moving faster than the install rate.) Unfortunately, their new CEO is wary of blind, high risk growth. Maybe it’s time to look for a different job!
I think they’re going to try to renegotiate, which is only going to cost lots of time.

Bill, Pond, 40 - by Cotton Ginny
We had a great weekend at Crabbs Prairie thanks to the Earthman’s hospitality. Many friends transited through Friday, Saturday, Sunday, Monday. We cooked, we drank, we played.
Virginia has some photos, and so do I.
And fyi, the convenient store is open there from 5am - 7pm, seven days a week.
My friends seem to know me. Amongst the gifts were good tequila, belgian beer, an Albert Einstein action figure, Jägermeister, Tito’s vodka, and a variety of minutia.
Jamming on guitars on the porch all night and drinking Lone Star was all that was desired of them, and I got that too.
And for everyone who couldn’t make it, we missed you.
