TG and I went to see Peter & James last night at the Big Top, Scrabble in tow. Peter & James are half of the Light Rock Express and sometimes referred to as the Light Rock Light.
When the first three letters TG pulled were L R E, I knew it was a bad sign. When the first word she played was B R A I L L E (with one blank for an L) it was confirmation. I was about to get smoked. And with 5+ vowels in my tray the whole game, I never got close.
Final 334 - 190.
The other two LRE members happened to be in the audience last night – entertaining the ladies – so they each sat in on a song or two.
Tonight: Astros. With 10 losses in a row, the Gambler’s Law of Averages tells me they’re gonna win.

“Could you point to the Angus area?”
I recently saw this Jack in the Box ad, and was mildly humored. They are selling their 100% sirloin burger, and backhandedly mocking the 100% Angus burger. I vaguely recalled someone advertising their Angusness but didn’t recall it being Carl Jr. (There aren’t any of those in the Houston area.)
I recall thinking mockingly “someone’s gonna sue for that”. And they did! The Language Log is wholeheartedly mocking them. They deserve it.
People moan about “litigious Americans”, but the vast majority of lawsuits are brought about by corporations, not individuals. Businesses file four times more lawsuits than private citizens and are sanctioned much more often for frivolous suits. It isn’t surprising, since corporations generally behave psychotically (trailer, part 1 of 23).
I don’t expect this lawsuit will go anywhere.

So, I finally took the time to watch The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch & the Wardrobe (2005). I reread it when it was about to be released as a movie and enjoyed it. I remember recalling that the battle “scenes” only lasted a few paragraphs and thinking they would certainly take many minutes of the finale of the movie. They did.
A lot of the effects were nice, but what really distracted me was the obvious green screen in many scenes. Many that could have been done on location or with nice sets or props. It took away from what could have been. Or Lord of the Rings has raised my expectations.
I also finished Seventh Son (1987) by Orson Scott Card. The first of a series of books centering on Alvin Maker and set in a different post-Colonial America. One that includes magic (though I’m not sure the word is ever used) and a different peace with natives (or so it seems - this gets expressed more in the next book that I haven’t read).
In the intro he is a young boy and his family are struggling pioneers. There are interesting back-stories with actual historical figures who are a bit different in this world. Not to mention the 7 colonies. It was a quite enjoyable read and with summer time coming I may have to get a few more
in the series.
As the title of this post hints, The Witch is the antagonist in the first book/movie and The Unmaker is the antagonist in the second.

Day 23 of the new blog and the spammers have found me. 13 spam comments showed up this evening. It seems I didn’t have Askimet installed, yet. It always does a fabulous front-line on WordPress spam comments.

Last Thursday the Chron PolitBlog called Texas Voter Fraud “a lie”. Friday the national media was writing an article on the stealthy disappearance of the American Center for Voting Rights. (An organization who was trying to sell us on rampant voter fraud.) Meanwhile the still Republican-controlled Texas Legislature was swinging their scepter to “protect us” from. . . something.
Galveston Judge Susan Criss chimed in with her support of Senator Gallegos, who against the will of his doctor was transported to Austin to keep the voting margin viable. The Houstonist informs that he can now return home to recover from his recent surgery.
The outrageous voter suppression bill did not pass the House by Wednesday midnight and the Lt. Governor has declared it procedurally dead. May it Rest in Peace! (and pieces)

The TMi page of the Star section of the Chron printed a 10 picture and clue scavenger hunt on Wednesday, all of which is along the light rail line. Of course I helped host, with Andrea Greer and Allen Hill, a scavenger hunt in January. The ending location and the cover of the CD which accompanied the hunt is one of the photos in the Chron’s hunt.
I have the time, I may play this one for the fun of it. I think I know 4 of them already.
