Texas Talk
“I got drunk,… as a skunk… because it rhymed.” – Drunkard’s Lullaby, The Minus Five
Studing the lingo that is Texas English, aka TXE. I thought it interesting that newcomers were particularly quick in picking it up.
The by-line is dated coincident with the start of the major ass whoopin’ that was put upon the Aggies this year. If it wasn’t for two Texas fumbles, it would have been 46-3. “Poooor Aggies”.

By RALPH BLUMENTHAL The New York TimesCOLLEGE STATION, Tex. “Are yew jus’ tryin’ to git me to talk, is that the ah-deah?”
That was the idea. John O. Greer, an architecture teacher at Texas A&M University, sat at his dining table between two interrogators and their tape recorder. They had precisely 258 questions for him. But it waddn what he said that interested them most. It was how he said it.

My family doesn’t have an ingrained Thangsgiving routine, and I like it that way. Every year I spend it with a different family. Often very extended, only knowing one or two people in the family before being there. I really enjoy getting a one day expedition into an extended family chemistry – and there have been some interesting ones. The more interesting come about by waiting to have a plan until one delivers itself to you.
My mom’s in Nashville, she’s often in Big Bend, it’s a travelling vacationing holiday for her and my step-dad. My dad’s at his new place. I got a call and invitation from him on Tuesday to join them, if I cared to. But I already had my plans. This year I’m going with my sister to her inlaw’s ranch. She’s been married 8 years, and I have yet to go there. Her husband is one of 4 siblings, I understand there are several houses at “the ranch”, but I’m really not sure what to expect.
I’m driving up today with her and the three nieces. And back on friday after the UT game. Should be fun and interesting.

Holiday Party
an early shout out…
‘Tis the season… for holiday parties.
Of course, I’m having mine again.
Well, to say it’s mine is overstating, but it is at my house.
If you’ve been before, I’m sure I’ll see you again, and if you haven’t, you should try to check it out this year.
The website isn’t totally put together yet, but here it is, so that you can fix your schedule so you can make it.

If you’re reading this, consider yourself invited.
Bring a friend.
Bring a shot-block beverage.
(There are a few out there who feigned injury because others received a hard-invite before they had. They need to suck it up and realize that there will be 200 people invited before them, and 200 after. It’s not your order in receiving the invitation that gives you your measure, it’s what you make of the information.)
Cold not Flu
mostly recovered from whatever was coming on, still gonna take it easy, hang with the nieces. So, I’ll miss the Ringwalds and Los Scarnales.
Tomorrow is the Art Crawl, hope I’m up for it. Whoever will I go with?

I had a nasty flu about two months ago, before the big Houston flu outbreak. Conn had it last week. I had to decide whether to hang out at home with his germs, and take it easy and stay healthy, or go out and avoid the germs and have fun. I, of course, chose the later.
I was also hoping that he had the same, non-mutated strain I had. Then Trey started getting ill yesterday. Being surrounded at work and home.
Then this morning I was feeling the telltale scratch in my throat. Cold or Flu. I went to the Continental, hoping for the best. We were ripping out the back wall and replacing it and hanging new doors. The kinda thinkg that leads to a long day and you have to finish before you leave.
Well, now I’m feeling a bit achy, very scratchy throat, and perhaps a mild fever (unmeasured). Trying to get lots of fluids, taking C and Zinc. I need to cook dinner because I have some food that will go bad, but still an early night. And no work tomorrow.
