Lee HS?

I was gonna spend monday calling and/or faxing schools about math jobs.  I started off the day checking the web site and there was a new listing for Lee HS.  I called them, the secretary asked around, they said they had an opening, to fax my resumé.  So, I got to a fax machine and sent it.

Saw Jonas monday night.  He knows the principal.  Called to remind him tuesday morning.  He called the principal, left a message.  I noticed the listing was no longer listed.  I suspect they had someone they wanted to hire, so they put it up on the listing (mandatory) before the hire.  Neither I nor Jonas have heard anything about it.

Curses, foiled again.

Truckstop Honeymoon

Truckstop Honeymoon opened up for Split Lip Rayfield last night at the CC.  A two piece hillbilly bluegrass band.  Washtub bass, and banjo.  I enjoyed them thouroughly.  Katie was 8 months pregnant.

“THERE AIN’T NOTHING NICE ABOUT TRUCKSTOP HONEYMOON. THEY PLAY BANJOS AND WASH TUBS. THEY SING HELL-BENT SONGS ABOUT JESUS AND ADULTERY. THEY SING FROM THEIR STOMACHS.

TRUCKSTOP HONEYMOON PLAY BREAK-NECK BREAKDOWNS OR WALTZS. THEIR MUSIC IS LIKE A DODGE WITH A BURNT OUT CLUTCH: IT HAS TWO SPEEDS AND NO REVERSE.

Faron Young

My favorite 80′s song that Molly and the Ringwalds will never cover is Faron Young by Prefab Sprout, on their 1985 release Steve McQueen. That album was produced by Thomas Dolby, one of the best producers of the 80′s, IMHO. Apparently, SPIN magazine called the album one of the 30 best of all time.

When Love Breaks Down was a more popular song from the album, but the jangly Faron Young was always my favorite.

Every other sentiment’s an antique
As obsolete as warships in the baltic
I’m driving on a straight road it never alters
And the radio serenades but doesn’t falter

Voting: Do It, and Vote NO

We (in Texas) have an off-cycle election Saturday.

22 Texas Constitutional amendments.

My Theory on Amendments. Vote NO.  Unless you’ve heard a lot of reasoned debate of the issue and agree to the yes vote, vote NO.  The Texas constitution is ridiculous. Why else would be be voting on 22 issues (only three you’ve likely heard of IF you’ve been paying attention).

This time particularly, vote NO on 12.  It’s horribly worded and will do ill if passed. The only others I’ve heard discussed were 6 and 16, and they couldn’t reasonably explain what they mean.   (They are both about reverse mortgages, which are already legal in Texas, but they “add something special”) The discussion I heard about them was unintelligible (and I’m a smart guy).   So, vote NO.

If you haven’t figured my opinion yet,

Vote NO

(and then get on with your saturday)

Alive Again

so after a week of forced horizontalness from icky sickness, i actualy went to pseudo work (Continental Club) today, and then after a large fast food (ick) dinner, and hot shower briefly crashed out while listening to NPR ATC/Marketplace,

got an odd call from a friend, down the street with many others, casualing at Onion Creek, walked down intending to have 2 beers and go home, i was very sensitive to the smoke (still recovering) even outside as we were.  of course chatted up with friends for five hours (so i had 4 beers) and then walked back home, sleep soon,

re: Continental Club – all the windows have been tinted, you cannot see in (mostly) during daylight or at night (‘cept for some bright lights (neon) at night), took all the bars out of the windows (briefly) and replaced them, so we finally got to the window box at the front of the club, it’s been in sad state for three years, we actually put a front on it and painted the front, and sanded and putty’d the surface, soon to be eurythaned

also, the exterior of the building was pressure washed last week, first time since,… it was built likely, the back especially looks good, but the brick front looks nicer, as well.

Artistic ‘Flower Man’ gets new house, paint job, too
By ANDREW GUY JR.
Copyright 2003 Houston Chronicle Paint cans sit on the ground, tops popped off, brushes dipping in and out. Sledge hammers lift and fall, crushing the dilapidated columns on the porch and the tile floors in the entrance. Workers scatter, lifting, squatting, brushing, sweeping.

“Yeah!” the Flower Man answers.

The door is painted.

Bright yellow.

“This is the only yellow that will bring out the life of this dead house,” the Flower Man says. “And it brightens up this corner.”
